What Are the Benefits of Protecting Coastline?

What Are the Benefits of Protecting Coastline?

Gabion mesh is to protect the coastline from natural factors such as wave wash, erosion and storm attacks, thus protecting the ecological environment and human society in coastal areas. The following are some of the reasons why coastal protection is necessary.

  • Economic Benefits: Coastal cities depend on economic activities such as marine tourism and port transportation. Coastal erosion affects the development of these economic activities and thus the local economic interests.
  • Ecosystem Protection: The vegetation and animal habitats along the coastline are an important part of the ecosystem. Coastal erosion and retreat can damage these ecosystems and affect the balance of the ecosystem.
  • Human Living Environment Protection: As a human living area, shoreline erosion and coastline retreat can threaten human safety.

What Measures Can Protect the Embankment Effectively?

  • Revetment brick: A masonry material used for shoreline protection, which protects the shoreline from wave erosion and scouring by embedding the bricks into the sand of the shoreline and usually more difficult to construct.
  • Sandbag Dike: A simple and easy coastal protection method that can be used to defend the waves by stacking sandbags along the shoreline. This method is inexpensive and easy to construct, but requires regular replacement of sandbags.
  • Caisson Revetment: A kind of revetment structure is built by using cement, stone and other materials. The advantages are strong structure and good durability, but the construction is more difficult.
  • Gabion Mesh: A mesh structure made of galvanized steel wire woven to effectively disperse the impact of waves, thus reducing the impact and erosion of waves on the coastline. Regular replacement is not required, while transportation and construction methods are simple and easy.

Why Choose Gabion Mesh?

  • Handling & Construction: The construction materials for gabion meshes are easy to transport to sites, easy to unload and place.
  • Impact Resistant Performance: Gabion meshes resist breakage and separation, due to the flexibility of their wire mesh
  • High Functionality: Gabion meshes provide protection against storm surge and wave erosion on beaches and tidal berms.
  • Excellent Water Permeability: Due to the placement of pebbles and gravel inside the gabion box, good permeability is maintained, allowing sufficient natural drainage of runoff while reducing water velocity by breaking down and dispersing large area pressure.

Where Can We Use Gabion Mesh?

Gabion mesh is limited to secondary defense or shelter in exposed areas or primary defense in estuary locations.

Gabion mesh acts as retaining structure or as a revetment in erosion control. When using gabion mesh, we prefer to recommend zinc-aluminum alloy wire with PVC coating or stainless steel wire. Since the impact force exerted by the seawater is intermittent, revetment slope constructed by gabion mesh does not exceed one-third. Besides, the stability between gabion meshes is also very important. The gabion meshes filled with pebbles must be packed tightly to avoid wear and tear of the gabion meshes caused by the movement of stones inside the meshes.

Whether it is a retaining wall or a revetment, the foundation scour must be rushed into consideration before construction. Otherwise, damage will occur causing failure affecting erosion protection.

Which Gabion Mesh to Choose?

Gabion mesh used for erosion control can be divided into two types: gabion boxes and gabion mattress.

  • Gabion box is a cubic or rectangular mesh structure. It usually consists of multiple grids whose grids are filled with stones or other materials to create a stable structure. It is commonly used in the construction of civil engineering works such as retaining walls and coastal protection.
  • Gabion mattress is thinner and flatter than gabion box, resembling a mattress. Gabion mattress is usually laid in a grid pattern along the slope of the shoreline. It is used for smaller projects such as slope protection, berm and riverbed remediation.
